Natural diamonds retain 20 to 50 percent of resale value while lab grown diamonds have significantly lower resale demand and depreciate more sharply over time.
Some purchases are easy to walk away from. A ring β especially one chosen with intention β is rarely one of them. But there's a question that sits quietly behind most diamond decisions, one people don't always feel comfortable asking out loud: what happens to the value of this ring if life changes?
It's a fair question. And an honest one. At Rings & I, where every ring is made to order at our studios in Pune and Mumbai, we'd rather have this conversation with you than let you discover the answer years later.
The short version: natural diamonds and lab-grown diamonds are not equal in resale markets. The longer version is more nuanced β and actually quite interesting.
Do Lab-Grown Diamonds Hold Their Resale Value?
Lab-grown diamonds are chemically, physically, and optically identical to mined diamonds. A gemologist cannot tell them apart with the naked eye. Certified by the same laboratories β IGI at igidiamond.com and GIA at gia.edu β they score on the same cut, clarity, colour, and carat scales. What they don't share is resale demand.

See the difference βNatural diamonds retain 20 to 50 percent of resale value while lab grown diamonds have significantly lower resale demand and depreciate more sharply over time. In India, this is one of the most common questions jewellers receive, and the answer depends on a few factors specific to Indian ring sizing standards, finger shape, and the style of ring you are choosing.
Natural diamonds typically retain somewhere between 20 and 50 percent of their original purchase price on resale. That's not spectacular β diamonds were never truly liquid investments β but there is a secondary market for them. Antique dealers, estate jewellers, and private buyers exist. Lab-grown diamonds, by contrast, have seen resale values drop sharply as production costs have fallen. A stone that cost βΉ1,50,000 a few years ago might fetch very little today, simply because a comparable new stone now costs a fraction of that.
This isn't a flaw in the diamond itself. It's a function of supply. Lab-grown diamonds can be produced at scale. Natural diamonds cannot. Scarcity is what gives mined stones their floor β however imperfect.

The Thing Most Buyers Don't Think About Until After
Here's what rarely comes up in the excitement of choosing a stone: in India, the resale conversation is complicated by sentiment as much as economics. Gold, for most Indian families, has always been the reliable store of value β it can be melted, revalued, and remade. Diamonds, natural or lab-grown, don't work that way. You cannot melt a diamond. Its value is always tied to what someone else is willing to pay for that specific stone.
For natural diamonds, that buyer exists β cautiously, selectively. For lab-grown diamonds, the buyer pool is still forming. Most Indian jewellers, at this point, will not buy back lab-grown stones the way they buy back gold or even natural diamonds. This doesn't mean lab-grown diamonds are a poor choice. It means they should be chosen for what they are β exceptional, accessible, stunning β not as a hedge against the future.
When it comes to the diamond itself, we always recommend certification. Like Tanishq and CaratLane, Rings & I follows IGI certification standards for lab-grown stones and encourages GIA-certified natural diamonds β so you know exactly what you're buying, whatever your choice.
A few things worth holding in mind as you decide:
- β Lab-grown diamonds give you more stone for your budget. A 1.5ct lab-grown can cost what a 0.7ct natural might.
- β Natural diamonds carry a historical premium that the secondary market still β for now β recognises.
- β The gold setting around your diamond will always retain melt value regardless of which stone you choose.
- β If resale matters to you, a certified natural diamond from a reputable source offers a clearer path back to market.

Questions People Ask Us About Diamond Value
Do lab-grown diamonds hold their value?
Not in the way natural diamonds do. As production technology has improved and supply has increased, resale prices for lab-grown stones have declined noticeably. They're a beautiful choice β but think of them the way you'd think of a luxury purchase, not an appreciating asset.
Is a natural diamond a better investment than lab-grown?
Neither is a strong financial investment on its own. Natural diamonds retain more resale value β typically 20 to 50 percent β but that's still a significant loss from original price. If investment is the priority, gold remains the more reliable choice in India. If meaning and beauty are the priority, both diamonds deliver that completely.
Can I resell a lab-grown diamond in India?
You can, but the market is limited. Most traditional jewellers and resellers in India currently prefer natural stones. The lab-grown resale market is still maturing here. Having IGI certification will help, but expect the process to take longer and returns to be lower.
How much do natural diamonds depreciate?
Typically 50 to 80 percent from retail price β the same diamond might resell at 20 to 50 percent of what you paid. This isn't unique to diamonds; most luxury goods depreciate sharply once purchased. The difference is that a market does exist for natural stones, particularly certified ones.
Should I buy natural or lab-grown for an engagement ring in India?
At our Mumbai studio, this is the question we hear most. If lifelong symbolism and some retained value matter, lean natural. If you want a larger, more visually striking stone within a set budget β and you're buying for the moment, not the market β lab-grown is genuinely wonderful. There's no wrong answer. There's only the answer that's right for you.
A diamond doesn't need to be an investment to be worth everything. It just needs to mean something β worn every day, becoming quietly part of your story. Take your time with this decision. We'll be here when you're ready.
Your ring. Your choice. Your way.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick Answers Β Β·Β Common Questions
Do lab-grown diamonds hold their value?
Lab grown diamonds do not hold value well. Resale demand is low and prices have dropped 50 to 80 percent since 2020 due to oversupply, making them a poor choice if resale value matters to you.
Is a natural diamond a better investment than lab-grown?
Natural diamonds are a relatively better store of value, typically retaining 20 to 50 percent of purchase price on resale. However, neither type is a strong financial investment compared to traditional assets like gold or equities.
Can I resell a lab-grown diamond in India?
Yes, but the resale market for lab grown diamonds in India is very limited. Most jewellers offer low buyback rates or decline entirely, so expect significant financial loss compared to the original purchase price.
How much do natural diamonds depreciate?
Natural diamonds typically lose 30 to 50 percent of their retail value immediately after purchase. Resale value depends on carat weight, cut quality, and market demand, with certified larger stones retaining more value over time.
