The most common way people figure out their ring size is also the most unreliable β borrowing a ring from their jewellery box, sliding it onto a random finger, and assuming that's close enough. We see the results of this approach regularly: rings that need resizing within weeks of purchase, sometimes before they've even been worn to the occasion they were bought for. Measuring your ring size properly takes about four minutes and saves a lot of back and forth.
How to Actually Measure Your Ring Size at Home
The method that works: cut a thin strip of paper β about 1 cm wide β or use a piece of non-stretchy string. Wrap it snugly around the base of the finger you're buying for. Mark the point where it overlaps with a pen, then lay it flat against a ruler. That measurement, in millimetres, is your finger's inner circumference. From there, you match it to a ring size chart.
Measure ring size at home in the evening using a paper strip around your finger, comparing the mm measurement to an Indian ring size chart. In India, this is one of the most common questions jewellers receive, and the answer depends on a few factors specific to Indian ring sizing standards, finger shape, and the style of ring you are choosing.

In India, ring sizes run on a scale of 1 to 30. A circumference of roughly 49β50 mm corresponds to Indian size 8β9, which is around a US size 5. Size 16β17 (Indian) sits at approximately 57β58 mm circumference and is one of the most common sizes we see ordered by women. Men typically fall between Indian sizes 20 and 26. These aren't rough estimates β they're the actual numbers we work with daily.
A few things that genuinely affect accuracy:
- Time of day: Fingers are slightly larger in the evening than in the morning. If you measure first thing after waking up, you might size down by half. Measure mid-afternoon when your fingers are at a stable size.
- Temperature: Fingers swell in heat and contract in cold. If you're measuring in May in Delhi versus December in Shimla, the difference can be nearly a full size.
- Monsoon humidity: This is something most guides completely ignore. During the monsoon months, fingers tend to retain slightly more water. If you're buying a ring in July or August to wear through the year, account for this β size up by half if you're between two numbers.
- Knuckle size: For some fingers, the knuckle is wider than the base. In that case, the ring needs to pass over the knuckle but sit comfortably at the base. Measure both points and find a middle ground, or consider a comfort-fit band which has a slightly rounded interior edge.
Measure the specific finger you'll wear the ring on. Left hand ring finger and right hand ring finger are often different sizes β sometimes by a full size or more.
The Thing Most Guides Get Wrong
Most online ring size calculators and charts are built around Western hand measurements. The truth is, Indian fingers tend to be broader at the base relative to their length β what jewellers sometimes call a "fuller taper." This means that a chart calibrated for European or American sizing can throw your measurement off by half a size, sometimes a full size on shorter fingers.
What this means practically: if you've ever ordered a ring using an international size chart and found it slightly tight even though the circumference measurement seemed right, this is likely why. The ring sits differently on a broader base. It's not just about circumference β the width of the band also plays a role. A wider band, say 6 mm or more, will feel tighter than a 2 mm band even at the exact same internal diameter. If you're choosing a wide band, size up by half.
Also worth being direct about: no home measurement method is perfect. A professional ring mandrel (the tapered metal tool jewellers use) is still more accurate than paper and string. If you're spending upwards of βΉ15,000β20,000 on a ring, it's worth visiting a jeweller in person and getting sized on a mandrel before ordering. The paper method is genuinely good enough for most purchases, but not infallible.
