Wrap a strip of paper around your finger, mark where it overlaps, measure that length in millimetres, and match it to a size chart. That is the short answer. But if you have ever ordered a ring using that method and still received something that did not fit, you already know there is more to it. We see this constantly β customers who measured carefully and still ended up half a size off, wondering what went wrong.
How to Actually Measure Your Ring Size (And Not Get It Wrong)
The paper strip method works, but the details matter more than most guides admit. Use a strip no wider than about 6β7mm β roughly the width of a standard ring band. Anything wider and you are measuring a different part of your finger than a ring actually sits on. Wrap it snugly around the base of the finger you want to wear the ring on. Not tight enough to cut circulation, not loose enough to slide. Mark the overlap with a fine-tipped pen, then measure the length flat against a ruler in millimetres.
Measure ring size at home by wrapping a paper strip around your finger, noting the overlap in mm, and matching to an Indian ring size chart. In India, this is one of the most common questions jewellers receive, and the answer depends on a few factors specific to Indian ring sizing standards, finger shape, and the style of ring you are choosing.
That measurement is your finger circumference. In the Indian ring sizing system β which runs on a scale of 1 to 30 β a circumference of 49mm corresponds to approximately size 8, while 52mm is around size 10, and 57mm lands near size 13. Most standard women's ring sizes in India fall between 8 and 14; men's between 16 and 24. These are not rigid rules, just honest averages we have seen across thousands of orders.
One thing that throws off home measurements almost every time: the time of day. Fingers swell slightly in the evening and during summer or high humidity β which, in most parts of India, means the monsoon months can add up to half a size. Measure in the afternoon when your finger size is most stable, and never measure immediately after exercise or a heavy meal.
If you are measuring for a wider band β anything above 6mm β go half a size up from your measured size. Wider bands sit tighter on the finger because they cover more surface area. This is a real adjustment, not a rough estimate.

The One Thing Most Ring Size Guides Get Wrong
Most guides online are built around Western sizing assumptions, and they do not say so. The truth is, many Indian fingers are broader at the base and taper less toward the knuckle than the finger profiles these charts are calibrated for. This can throw a measurement off by half a size to a full size β and it almost always results in a ring that passes the knuckle fine but then sits loose at the base, or worse, a ring that cannot get past the knuckle at all.
The fix is simple but rarely mentioned: measure both the knuckle and the base of your finger. If there is a significant difference β say, more than 2β3mm β size for the knuckle and plan for a slightly looser fit at the base, or look for rings with a comfort-fit interior (slightly domed on the inside) which are easier to slide on and off. We recommend this especially for customers with pronounced knuckles, which is more common than most people expect.
Also, if you are buying during a festival β Dhanteras, Akshaya Tritiya, wedding season β keep in mind that most jewellers, including us at Rings & I, offer free ring resizing within a defined period. Use it. Do not stress about getting it perfect from a home measurement alone.
