BIS Hallmark Gold Jewellery India: What You Need to Know

BIS Hallmark Gold Jewellery India: What You Need to Know

There's a particular kind of trust that comes with gold. Not blind trust β€” but the quiet confidence that what you're holding is exactly what someone says it is. In a country where gold is woven into celebrations, milestones, and memories, that trust matters more than almost anything else.

And yet, for decades, it was surprisingly easy to be misled. A ring sold as 22 karat that was closer to 18. A necklace priced like pure gold that was anything but. It happened often enough that most families had a story β€” a piece bought in good faith that turned out to be less than promised.

That's where the BIS hallmark changed everything. At Rings & I, we've always made gold jewellery the way it should be made β€” with full transparency about every material that goes into your ring. The BIS hallmark isn't just a stamp we follow because we have to. It's the foundation of every promise we make.

What the Hallmark Actually Tells You

The Bureau of Indian Standards hallmark is a certification that appears on gold jewellery after it's been tested and verified at a BIS-recognised Assaying and Hallmarking Centre. It confirms that the piece meets the purity it claims β€” nothing more, nothing less.

A hallmarked piece carries specific details: the BIS logo itself, the purity grade (expressed in fineness β€” 999 for 24 karat, 916 for 22 karat, 750 for 18 karat), and a six-character alphanumeric HUID β€” a Hallmark Unique ID that was introduced in 2021 to make every single piece individually traceable. You can verify your jewellery's authenticity directly on the BIS Care app using that code.

For rings especially, this matters in a way that goes beyond finances. A ring you wear every day β€” through seasons, through life β€” should be exactly what it claims to be. If you're commissioning a custom ring in 18 karat rose gold, you deserve to know, with certainty, that the metal on your finger is precisely that.

Since June 2021, hallmarking has been mandatory for gold jewellery sold in India. Which means any reputable jeweller should have no hesitation showing you the hallmark. If they do hesitate β€” that's your answer.

The Part Most Buyers Don't Think to Ask About

Most people check whether gold is hallmarked. Far fewer think to ask about the stones set within it β€” or the making charges layered on top of the gold rate. A hallmark certifies the metal's purity. It says nothing about whether the diamonds are graded accurately, or whether the gemstones are natural or treated. These are separate questions, and they deserve separate answers.

At Rings & I, every ring we make comes with full material transparency β€” not just the hallmark on the gold, but clarity on the stones, the setting, and what you're actually paying for. A ring should come with no small print.

Consider the Karat β€” and What It Means for Your Ring

Choosing a karat isn't just a purity decision. It's a practical one. 24 karat gold is the purest form β€” but it's also the softest, which makes it unsuitable for rings worn daily. Most fine jewellery in India is made in 22 karat or 18 karat, and each has its own character.

18 karat gold β€” 75% pure gold alloyed with other metals β€” is harder, more durable, and ideal for intricate settings or rings that hold stones. 22 karat is richer in colour, closer to that deep, warm gold tone that Indian jewellery is known for, and better suited to simpler band styles. The right choice depends on how you live, not just how the ring looks in the display case.

  • ● 24 karat (999 fineness): Purest gold. Too soft for everyday rings.
  • ● 22 karat (916 fineness): Rich colour. Best for classic bands and plain gold styles.
  • ● 18 karat (750 fineness): Harder, more durable. Ideal for stone-set and detailed designs.
  • ● All three are hallmarkable β€” and at Rings & I, all three are available made to order.

Your ring. Your fit. Your way.

Questions Worth Asking

How do I verify a BIS hallmark on a ring I've already bought?

Download the BIS Care app and enter the six-character HUID stamped on your piece. It'll pull up the registered details β€” the jeweller, the purity, the date of hallmarking. Takes about thirty seconds and removes all doubt.

Does hallmarking affect the price of gold jewellery?

Minimally. The cost of hallmarking is small β€” typically a few hundred rupees per piece β€” and a responsible jeweller absorbs it as part of doing business honestly. If someone is quoting you significantly higher prices because of hallmarking, it's worth asking more questions.

Can a custom-made ring be hallmarked?

Absolutely. Made-to-order jewellery goes through the same hallmarking process as anything you'd find in a showroom. At Rings & I, every custom piece is hallmarked before it reaches you β€” that's not optional, it's standard.

Is 916 gold the same as 22 karat?

Yes. The fineness number 916 simply means 91.6% pure gold β€” which is the precise purity of 22 karat. You'll see both terms used; they refer to the same thing. On a BIS hallmark, purity is expressed in fineness, so 916 is what you're looking for on a 22 karat piece.

Gold has always meant something in India β€” beyond its price, beyond its weight. It carries intention. It marks moments. At Rings & I, we believe that something that meaningful deserves to be exactly what it claims to be.

So when you create your ring with us, the hallmark isn't the end of the story. It's just the part that lets everything else begin with trust.
